In-home newborn photos are the better choice for most families who want natural, warm photos and an easy day, while a studio session is the better choice if you want posed, styled portraits on backdrops with props. Neither is wrong. They produce different photos and a different experience, and it helps to know the difference before you book.
What an in-home newborn session feels like
I come to you. You stay in comfortable clothes, the baby stays in the space they already know, and we work around feeding and naps instead of a studio clock. The photos happen by your brightest window: baby in the crib, baby on your bed, baby in your arms, the big sibling peeking in. Everything in the frame is yours, which is what makes these photos feel like your family years later.
What a studio session usually offers
Studios bring controlled light, heated posing beanbags, wraps, headbands, baskets and backdrops. The results are the classic curled, sleeping newborn portraits. Sessions can run two to four hours because posing is slow and careful. Some studios include wardrobe for parents. Pricing is often a session fee plus images or products.
Comfort and timing
At home, there is no packing a diaper bag, no car seat at eight days postpartum, and no rush. If the baby needs to eat, we pause. In a studio, you drive there and back and the session runs on the studio's schedule. Both are fine. One is easier.
The look
Studio newborn photos look polished and timeless in a very specific way, and if that is the look you love, a studio is the right call. In-home photos look like real life at its softest: window light, the nursery you spent months on, your own hands. If you would rather your photos feel than pose, home wins.
Siblings and pets
Home, every time. Toddlers meeting a camera and a new baby in an unfamiliar room is a lot to ask. At home they have their own space to retreat to, and the dog can be in a frame or two.
Cost
In-home lifestyle sessions are usually the more affordable option because there is no studio overhead, no props and no product minimums. My in-home newborn sessions run from $200 to $500 with edited images and print rights included. A simple way to decide
If you picture your newborn photos and see backdrops and props, book a studio. If you picture your nursery window, your bed and your family piled together, book an in-home session. And either way, book during the third trimester so the date is held before the baby arrives.
