Newborn photography in Chicago and the North Shore costs anywhere from a couple of hundred dollars to well over a thousand, depending on whether you book a short in-home session or a full studio package with products. My in-home newborn sessions run from $200 to $500, and every package includes edited images in a private gallery with full print rights.
That is the short answer. Here is what sits behind the range so you can compare photographers fairly.
What published cost guides show for Chicago
Looking across published 2026 pricing from Chicago newborn photographers and national cost guides, the market breaks into a few tiers. Mini sessions from some Chicago studios start around $275. Many boutique studios charge a session fee of roughly $400, then sell digital images or products on top. Full-service studio packages that include wardrobe, hair and makeup and albums commonly land between $1,000 and $1,500. National guides put the average newborn and baby photographer at about $200 per hour.
So if you have seen prices that seem all over the place, you are reading them correctly. The difference is mostly about what is included and where the session happens.
What drives the price up or down
- Studio or in-home. Studios carry rent, props and backdrops. In-home sessions carry a drive. That is the single biggest difference in price.
- Session fee versus all-inclusive. Some photographers charge a lower fee up front and then price each image or product afterward. Others, like me, include the images in the package. Always ask what the number you are quoted actually gets you.
- Length and number of images. A 30-minute mini with 10 images costs less than a 90-minute session with 30 images and sibling photos.
- Products. Albums, wall art and prints can add several hundred dollars. If you only want digital files, say so.
- Travel. I include travel within 10 miles of Skokie. Farther than that, a $50 travel fee applies.
What my newborn sessions cost
My newborn sessions happen in your home in Skokie, Evanston, Wilmette, Lincolnwood or anywhere on the North Shore. The Mini is $200 for 30 minutes and 10 edited images. The Classic is $325 for 60 minutes and 20 images. The Full is $500 for 90 minutes and 30 images, which is the right choice when you want unhurried time for siblings and the whole family. Newborn sessions run on the baby's schedule, so I book them with room for feeding and settling.

What you should get for the money
Whatever you spend, a newborn session should include a photographer who is comfortable and safe with newborns, gentle posing that never puts the baby in a position they cannot hold, family and sibling photos, professionally edited images and the right to print them. If any of those are missing or cost extra, factor that into the comparison.
Is it worth it?
The newborn window lasts about two weeks. The tiny curled fingers, the wrinkly feet and that brand-new sleepy softness disappear before most parents have caught up on sleep. A newborn session is one of the few things you truly cannot do later. Choose the level that fits your budget, but choose one.
