How Much Do Family Photos Cost? A North Shore Photographer's Honest Answer

A professional family photo session in the United States typically costs between about $300 and $750 in 2026 according to published cost guides, with entry-level sessions starting nearer $150 and studio packages in large cities running well past $1,000. My family sessions in Skokie and Chicago's North Shore run from $200 to $500, and the edited images are included.

That range is wide because family photographers structure pricing in very different ways. Here is how to read it.

What the 2026 cost guides say

Across several published pricing guides, a standard family session includes 60 to 90 minutes of the photographer's time, one location, direction for a group of three to six people, and a gallery of edited digital files. Entry-level photographers charge roughly $150 to $300 for that. Mid-range photographers charge $400 to $800. Studios with hair and makeup, wardrobe and albums often land between $1,000 and $3,000. Larger cities run about 25 to 40 percent above the national average.

What changes the price

  • Session length. A 30-minute mini is the most affordable way to get updated photos. A 90-minute session gives extended families room for every grouping.
  • Images included or sold separately. Some photographers charge a session fee and then price each image. Others include a set number of edited images. Both are legitimate, but they are not comparable until you add up the total.
  • Location. Studio sessions carry overhead. Outdoor and in-home sessions do not, though a park may require a photography permit.
  • Products. Albums and wall art are wonderful and they are also where a $400 session becomes a $1,500 invoice. Decide in advance whether you want them.
  • Travel. Sessions within 10 miles of Skokie carry no travel fee with me. Beyond that, $50.

What my family sessions cost

The Mini is $200 for 30 minutes at one location with 10 edited images. The Classic is $325 for 60 minutes and 20 images, and it is the most popular choice for families with young kids because it leaves room to play. The Full is $500 for 90 minutes and 30 images, the right fit for extended family and multigenerational groups. Every package includes a private online gallery and full print rights. Wardrobe guidance is included with the Classic and Full sessions.

Details and what each package includes are on the Sessions and Pricing page. You can read about how sessions work on the family photography page.

How to compare photographers fairly

Ask three questions. What is the total for a session plus the number of images I actually want? Are there travel, permit or rush fees? And what does the work look like with real families, not styled shoots? Price matters, but the photos are the thing you keep.

Ways to keep the cost reasonable

Book a mini session for yearly updates and save the longer session for the years when something is changing. Pick a park close to home so there is no travel fee. Skip products until you have seen the gallery. And book fall dates early, because the best light of the year is also the busiest.

If you are planning family photos in Skokie, Evanston, Wilmette or anywhere on the North Shore, tell me about your family and I will suggest the package that fits.
