How much does an engagement photoshoot cost in Chicago?
TWA's guide says a standalone Chicago session runs $450 to $1,200. At the low end that means about 45 to 60 minutes at one location with edited digital files. At the high end it means 90 minutes to two hours, more than one location, heavier editing and sometimes print credits. The same guide notes that couples spending $3,500 to $7,000 on wedding photography often have an engagement session bundled in or offered as a discounted add-on.
Why do engagement photographers charge such different prices?
Experience, mostly. PhotographersRanked's 2026 pricing guide breaks it into three tiers: a photographer who second-shoots weddings may charge $300 to $500 for a one-hour session, a working portrait photographer with three to seven years of experience charges $600 to $1,200, and a sought-after wedding photographer who books out a year ahead charges $1,200 to $2,500 or more. The same guide adds a 15 to 25 percent premium for Chicago compared to national averages, and notes that spring and fall weekends often carry a 10 to 20 percent peak-season premium.
What changes the price
- Session length and locations. One location for an hour is the base. A second location, a second outfit and a longer session all add cost.
- Images included or sold separately. Some photographers charge a session fee and then price each image. Add it up before you compare.
- Wedding bundling. If your wedding photographer includes a session, the standalone price may not matter. If they are out of town, a local session is often cheaper than flying them in.
- Permits. The Garfield Park Conservatory, the Chicago Botanic Garden and several Chicago Park District sites require a photography permit. It is usually a small fee, but it is a fee.
- Season. Peak fall and spring dates cost more with many photographers. Winter and weekday sessions are easier to book.

Engagement sessions use my standard packages. The Mini is $200 for 30 minutes at one location with 10 edited images. The Classic is $325 for 60 minutes and 20 images, and it is what most couples choose. The Full is $500 for 90 minutes and 30 images with two locations, which works well for a lakefront-plus-neighborhood plan. What you should get for the money
Whatever you spend, an engagement session should include a photographer who directs you gently rather than posing you stiffly, professionally edited images, clear print rights, and a plan for weather. Ways to keep the cost reasonable
Book a weekday evening. Choose one strong location instead of two. Skip products until you have seen the gallery. And if you want the photos for save-the-dates, plan the session at least two months before you need to send them so there is no rush fee anywhere in the chain.
